Top 5 Reasons Your Website Must Be Mobile-Friendly

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0

The world has changed.

In the early days of the web, it was enough for your business to simply have an email account. Then it was enough to have a website. Now, just having a website is not enough. Your website must, must, be mobile-friendly!

A number of our clients are sole traders, tradespeople, or small businesses. They’ve asked us if they really ‘need’ their website to be optimized for mobile devices. The simple answer is a great big ‘yes’!

These are the top 5 reasons why it’s incredibly, crucially important for your site to be mobile-friendly.

  • More people are browsing on mobiles than computers

As we said, the world has changed. Gone are the days when everyone would be sat down staring at a big monitor when they browsed the web.

The number of people forecast to own a smartphone in 2016, worldwide, is a whopping 2.1 billion. 80% of mobile users browse the web on their phones. Most importantly of all, over half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices.

The simple fact is that if your website isn’t mobile-optimized, you’re missing out on a huge chunk of your potential audience.

  • People browse differently on mobile

It’s not just that more people browse on their mobiles than on their computers. They actually browse differently.

Basically, mobile internet users have shorter attention spans than their computer counterparts. Perhaps the best example of this is the fact that 50% of mobile users will leave a site if it takes longer than 10 seconds to load. Of those, 60% will never return. If your site isn’t optimized for phones, you’re taking the big risk of falling into that dreaded ‘longer than 10 seconds to load’ bracket.

Think about it practically. People browsing on a computer can take their time. They’ll be a little more willing to wait for a page to load, and they’re more likely to spend longer on a page once it’s loaded. They’re probably sat in their favourite desk chair, or they’re lazing around on a sofa with their laptop: they’re comfortable! By contrast, people on their phones will often be in more of a hurry. They’re filling the last few moments of a bus ride, or stealing a couple of minutes on their phone in the bathroom at work (we’ve all been there!). They need to get what they’re looking for as quickly as possible.

  • People expect it

We’ve brought some pretty indisputable facts to the table already to highlight the situation, but the chances are you already suspected more people than ever were browsing on their phones. Based on the statistics, you probably do yourself!

You know what it’s like to use the web on your mobile, and you know how frustrating it is to try and use a website that isn’t mobile-optimized. The fact is that if you don’t have a mobile-optimized site nowadays, you stick out like a sore thumb.

The research backs this up. In fact, 57% of users go so far as to say that if a business doesn’t have a well-designed mobile site, they wouldn’t recommend them to a friend. Over ¾ say they’re more likely to revisit a site if it’s mobile-friendly. And, as you well know, the more times someone returns to your website, the more likely they are to buy!

  • Google loves it!

Google is becoming an all-powerful force across the internet, and what their search engine likes is largely responsible for driving web design trends.

Think about it: had you ever heard of SEO ten years ago? Probably not! But over time people learned of the crucial importance of ensuring your site was search engine-friendly (and Google-friendly especially). Now, even if you’re not web experts like the team here at Avondhu, you probably know at least a little bit about the basics of SEO.

It’s the same with mobile-optimization. Google knows all about the stats we’ve mentioned already: they realize the crucial importance of a good mobile site. And, for their own reasons ($$$), they want users to have the best possible internet experience, and to stay online for as long as possible. That’s why they’ve even gone so far as to start penalizing sites that aren’t mobile-optimized.

Don’t fall foul of Google’s wrath!

  • Mobile users buy more

Talking of $$$!

This one might surprise you, but the simple fact is that people spend more time shopping on their mobiles now than they do on their computers (55% to 45%). This makes it even more crucial that your site is fully optimized to sell to people on their mobiles, not just on their computers. That is, if you like making money (we assume you do).

This doesn’t just go for massive e-commerce sites: shops selling clothing, electronics, and so on. Many of our clients here at Avondhu are sole traders, tradespeople, or other small businesses. If you fall into this category too, it’s still vitally important that you optimize your site to maximize your earning potential.
