The number of people forecast to own a smartphone in 2016, worldwide, is a whopping 2.1 billion. 80% of mobile users browse the web on their phones. Most importantly of all, over half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices.

It’s not just that more people browse on their mobiles than on their computers. They actually browse differently.
Basically, mobile internet users have shorter attention spans than their computer counterparts. Perhaps the best example of this is the fact that 50% of mobile users will leave a site if it takes longer than 10 seconds to load. Of those, 60% will never return. If your site isn’t optimized for phones, you’re taking the big risk of falling into that dreaded ‘longer than 10 seconds to load’ bracket.
Think about it practically. People browsing on a computer can take their time. They’ll be a little more willing to wait for a page to load, and they’re more likely to spend longer on a page once it’s loaded. They’re probably sat in their favourite desk chair, or they’re lazing around on a sofa with their laptop: they’re comfortable! By contrast, people on their phones will often be in more of a hurry. They’re filling the last few moments of a bus ride, or stealing a couple of minutes on their phone in the bathroom at work (we’ve all been there!). They need to get what they’re looking for as quickly as possible.

We’ve brought some pretty indisputable facts to the table already to highlight the situation, but the chances are you already suspected more people than ever were browsing on their phones. Based on the statistics, you probably do yourself!
You know what it’s like to use the web on your mobile, and you know how frustrating it is to try and use a website that isn’t mobile-optimized. The fact is that if you don’t have a mobile-optimized site nowadays, you stick out like a sore thumb.
The research backs this up. In fact, 57% of users go so far as to say that if a business doesn’t have a well-designed mobile site, they wouldn’t recommend them to a friend. Over ¾ say they’re more likely to revisit a site if it’s mobile-friendly. And, as you well know, the more times someone returns to your website, the more likely they are to buy!
